Our town

First, you are greeted by the sign of the symbol of Graivoron land (a flying raven on the yellow ground).

Then you can see a long straight beautiful street with flowers on the both sides of the street. It’s our Graivoron, the centre of Graivoron district, a small district in the heart of vast Russia.

The historical fate of Graivoron is associated with the history of Russia. A lot of wars happened for the rich land of the area that had attracted the first settlers here. Battles were accompanied with birds of prey, as a rule, that’s why a flying raven on the gold field is depicted on the Graivoron coat of arms. Besides, a raven is considered a wise proud long-living bird. Unfortunately, this bird is very rare for our area, there are only crows.

Graivoron is a land famous by its rich historical past, traditions, customs. It was founded in 1678 as a fortress against Turks. The settlers were attracted by a great number of animals and rich lands. A lot of people came here from the left side of the Dnepr. 

A lot of different trades began to develop in Graivoron. So, many  new workshops, shops were opened by different craftsmen and they began to change and trade their goods at the market in the centre of the town.

There are some versions concerning the name "Graivoron”. One of them is that Graivoron means a "nest of ravens”. Another version is connected with the name of Russian tsar Peter the Great, therefore one of the most beautiful places in the town is called Petrovskaya Krucha.

Graivoron is rich in talented people. One of them is V.G.Shukhov, the second school in Graivoron is called after his name. The fame of Professor V.Shukhov crossed the borders of Russia and spread abroad. His talent of an engineer created delicate towers and bridges made of metal (the famous  Shabolovka tower), more than a hundred of discoveries. In honour of V.Shukhov there is a park and a  monument to the famous engineer opposite the school.

Everybody is greatly impressed by the building next to the children’s library. It’s the former merchant Dmitrenko’s house with a steeple, which was brought from Germany. Now it is a sanatorium "Lastochka”. A lot of children all over Belgorod region are treated and have rest here. A steeple of the sanatorium is another symbol of Graivoron.

In the central park there is an Ecclesiastical Enlightener Centre. It has various departments for children activities, such as Sunday school, workshops where children can do their best in a great variety of activities. Besides, the Centre organizes trips about different saint places of Russia. Then, there is a family club where you can meet your friends’ families, chat, have a cup of tea, recite favourite poems, sing your favourite songs and even dance.

A chapel of Belgorod Sanctifier Josaphat was built in 1998 like a part of one architectural ensemble.

The centre of the town is especially interesting, because it’s the mixture of old and new styles. The first gymnasium for men is now one hundred years old. It’s a real temple of knowledge. It’s remarkable in its architecture and is one of the sights of Graivoron. Now it’s a specialized school and we are proud that a lot of doctors, teachers, scientists, officers graduated from our school.

In the central square there is a large modern building. It is a Culture and Sport Palace. Here you can do aerobics, watch different kinds of competitions, concerts, there are various studios for children activities.

Not every town can boast of home zoo. There is such a sight in Graivoron. S.I. Kornienko keeps a home zoo with different sorts of birds.

Today Graivoron is an administrative and cultural town of Graivoron district. The population of Graivoron is about seven thousand people.

Graivoron today is a district centre where there is one processing, one transport enterprise, a central district hospital, a regional children’s sanatorium, sport school, a regional psychoneurological hospital and a boarding house, two large schools, a kindergarten, Culture and Sport Palace, Art school, two libraries, more than 90 shops, a supermarket, a cinema, a lot of playgrounds for children, banks and stadiums.

Graivoron has greatly changed; everybody takes care about its image of a modern clean beautiful town. We are proud of our home town!
